Barking Foodbank Launches Summer Volunteering Scheme for Local Children

Hope Family UK, through its Barking Foodbank Project, is launching an exciting new initiative this summer that will give thirty local children aged 8 to 14 the chance to spend part of their holidays volunteering, learning, and having fun.

The Children and Young People Holiday Volunteering Scheme runs in two groups: from 7–17 August for the first 15 children, and from 21–31 August for the second group. Each child will commit to 24 hours of volunteering across Barking Foodbank and its clothes bank, with all participants receiving a certificate upon completion.

More Than Just Volunteering

The scheme is designed to be a truly immersive experience, helping children understand the value of volunteering while developing important life skills. Participants will be encouraged to think creatively, build confidence, and strengthen social and emotional skills. By stepping outside of their comfort zones, children will gain new perspectives, meet new friends, and experience situations they might not otherwise encounter.

“Volunteering is about more than just giving your time—it’s about building character, empathy, and community spirit,” a spokesperson from Hope Family UK explained. “This programme allows children to learn those values in a safe, fun, and supportive environment.”

Rewards and Recognition

Each week, children will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning during Rewards Friday. On this day, participants nominate their peers for exemplifying the skills and values they have practised throughout the week. Winners receive prizes, and the day is capped off with an educational outing to one of London’s many child-friendly attractions, such as museums, galleries, or parks.

These trips not only provide a break from volunteering but also allow children to explore the city, broaden their horizons, and celebrate their achievements together.

Making the Programme Accessible

The scheme costs £25 per child per week, covering lunch and outings. However, Hope Family UK is committed to making the programme accessible and has pledged to provide funding support on a case-by-case basis for children whose families may struggle to afford the fee.

A Step Toward Lifelong Values

By combining volunteering with learning and fun, the Barking Foodbank Children and Young People Holiday Volunteering Scheme offers children an opportunity to grow into socially responsible and empathetic individuals. The hope is that many will carry these values forward into adulthood, inspiring future generations to support their communities.
